Adding Area Rugs to your Interior Design Strategy

February 8th, 2010

For homes with wooden or tiled floors, area rugs can serve as colorful accents that bring a home’s floor to life and add a new element to your interior design strategy. In fact, area rugs are one of the favorite tools of professional interior designers. Here are a few tips on how to use area rugs in your home.

Size and General Tips

It’s important to get the measurements right before you even begin to search for the nicest area rug in San Diego. Take a tape measure and determine what size rug you’ll need for each room. A good rule of thumb is that a rug should be about 24 inches (2 ft) shorter than the shortest wall in the room.
Now, do area rugs work for wall to wall carpeting? The answer is yes, despite what anyone might tell you. Just make sure the contrast between the carpeting and the rug is good.

The Living Room

Living rooms are the place where homeowners and guests gather round and talk. Area rugs are great for creating an atmosphere of conversation and togetherness. Pick a color and design that matches your furniture layout. If you have a small living room, a single large area rug will suffice. If you have a larger living room with different areas, two or more rugs are best to create a cozy feeling. For an area rug to cozily define a conversational grouping, it should leave no more than two feet of bare floor extending behind the furniture. All the furniture pieces should have at least their front legs on the area rug itself.

Bedrooms

Area rugs protect your feet from cold wood floors and make your bedroom feel warmer and more welcoming. They also help create a focal point, which usually points to the bed (the center piece of any bedroom). The rug should be under, minimum, a third of the bed. It should extend 30 to 36 inches from the side of the bed.

Hallways and Stairs

Hallways and stairways are two of the most high-traffic areas of any house, and are rugs and runner carpets can help protect the floor from wear and tear and also give these areas some spice. Rule of thumb: pick a rug that lets approximately six inches flooring show on all sides.

Dining Rooms

Area rugs can turn a cold dining room into a warm and welcoming place to sit down and eat. Pick an area rug big enough to fit all the table pieces and chairs. There should be plenty of rug space left around the furniture. A good rule is to add at least 40 to 48 inches the measurements of your table and have that be the size of your dining room rug.

Right PAD does not harm your Carpet Denver wooden floors

February 8th, 2010

It is a proven fact that a rug pad prolongs the life of your rug, adds comfort and sound absorbtion as well as safety for non slip reasons. Now, we must consider the right rug pad that does not harm our wood, or other hard surface, floors.

For room size rugs that don’t tend to slide, I like a nice quality dense jute pad. Today’s jute pads are not rough and do not shred like the old days. There is a great pad available that is made using recycled material such as nylon and wool fiber from Carpet Denver scraps. This jute pad is made with a needle punched process to create a dense, yet comfortable pad that does not shed, smell and is mold and mildew resistant.

Jute pads come in various weights. They start at 20 ounce and go up to 40 ounce. The best pad for all rugs is the 40 ounce jute pad. Due to its weight, it is dense enough to protect your rugs and your floors yet soft enough to feel comfortable. A spongy type pad, much of what is used under wall to wall Carpet Denvering, is not desired under area rugs. The spongy pads allow penetration from the surface of your rug to the floor underneath, hence causing possible indentations to your floors as well as a lack of a soild foundation to the back of your rugs, where they need the protection.

In the world of rubber, or non slip, pads, there are many choices that resemeble each other. This type of pad is made from a dense needle punched jute surface and a rubber, or rubber like, backing. Here is where we need to be careful. It is important to choose a pad in this category that contains a solid rubber back. Many of these pads have a sprayed on latex backing. This sprayed latex will provide a non slip effect for a while yet it can be a short while before damage occurs. The fact that the latex is sprayed on means that there is not a strong enough hold between the latex and the jute surface. This is why we hear about “rubber” rug pads that tend to break down or stick to hard floor surfaces. I like the non slip pad that contains this jute surface and a solid layer of rubber which is sewn on to the jute. Because this is an independent solid layer of real rubber, it will last longer, provide better non slip functions and will not harm your floors.

Your area rugs are an investment and the safety of your family means everything. Don’t skimp when it comes to the right rug pad. Make a qualilty choice and you won’t have to worry about your rug pads for years to come.

Custom rugs: they may be your answer

February 8th, 2010

When decorating a home, whether you are a professional interior designer or a self-sufficient home owner, you will have run across the question of what to do with the floor.  Wall to wall carpeting can be boring, stone and tile can be hard to live with (and hard on the feet), and hardwood floors can need something to break up the endless parallel lines.  An area custom rug is often the answer.

But, once you have decided you need an area rug, now what?  Well, you may have spent hours trolling through various shops, department stores, and home improvement stores.  Many people have found what they need in these places and often you can get a machine-made custom rug for an additional fee.  However those who are not interested in “disposable” rugs made with cheap materials (meant to be used for a couple years and then tossed out) are often frustrated by the selection.  And increasingly, people have discovered someone in their family has developed allergies to the synthetic nylons and glues that make up these mass produced rugs.

Hand-knotted rugs on the other hand, are desirable for their beauty, quality, warmth, natural organic materials, and investment properties.  They are often family heirlooms that have been passed down by generations.  If you are lucky enough to have one of these beautiful rugs, you may in fact, be starting with it as a base and decorating the room around it!

However, traditional hand-knotted rugs are most often made in traditional oriental patterns and colors.  They can be hard to fit into today’s décor – whether your style is Modern, Art Deco, Arts & Crafts, Cape Cod, or your own personal mix and match style.  Traditional hand-knotted oriental rugs can also be hard to fit into a room as they are traditionally made in a rectangular or round shape with a defined border around the edge.  If you have an unusual room shape or furniture arrangement, it can often clash with the rug layout.

Luckily, there is a way to have the best or both worlds – a Custom Rug, made in the traditional hand-knotted method.  Today, there are weaving centers in Nepal and India populated by displaced Tibetans who hand make rugs for export.  This allows them to be self sufficient and not reliant on their host countries.  In the 50 odd years since they were forced from Tibet, they have managed to retain their culture and identity, and kept their centuries’ old tradition of rug making alive.  These centers are often the hubs of the community, housing children’s schools and adult education classes.

With a hand knotted custom rug, you can select from the wide range of modern designs available, or you can utilize the graphic designer to match a wallpaper or fabric swatch.  You can select from over 1200 color samples, or can use your swatch to obtain a perfect color match.  In the Tibetan tradition, these custom rugs are only made from the highest quality hand-combed and hand-spun wool – made from Tibetan highland sheep – and Grade A Chinese silk.  The Tibetan rug knot is a unique high density knot that produces a denser rug, increasing its durability.

So, you really can have it all!  A custom rug made to your size, shape, color, and pattern specification – usually for less cost than a traditional hand-knotted rug, and you can usually have it in less than 3 months.  A short amount of time to wait while talented Tibetans hand knot a custom rug just for you!
