Sofa Covers – Avoid Having To Pay For A Whole New Sofa

June 15th, 2010

Slip covers or, as they are more commonly known, sofa covers cover the sofa in its entirety with a material that makes it look brand new while keeping it protected.

Furniture is quite often pricey. Replacing a couch can really break a budget. Putting couch covers on your sofa is a fantastic way of making your couch look brand new. These covers will cost about one tenth of replacing your furniture. A simple cover can dramatically change its look. They can be a quick pick me up for any room.

The styles of these covers come in quite a variety. There are form fitting types of covers. These form fitting types or tailored types can be ready made or custom made. Another name for a custom made cover is a slip cover. A large piece of material that is thrown over a couch and then tucked into the cushions giving it a more fitted look is also called a slip cover. They can come in an array of colors and materials. There are matching accessories to go along with slipcovers, such as drapes and chair covers.

Purchasing them is relatively simple. When you have decided to purchase either readymade covers or form fitting tailored ones, the shopping is simple as pie. There are tons of places that you can purchase from. Linen stores, discount stores, home goods stores, warehouse discount stores, and tons of smaller stores all carry them. The most expensive option will be to have them handmade. Custom designed slipcovers can cost hundreds of dollars.

The cost of sofa covers depends on the material that they are made from and where they are purchased. The cost will go up in proportion with the luxury of the material it is made of. Those that are purchased through a department store that sells home goods will be more expensive than covers that are purchased through a discount store. Custom made styles will be the most expensive option. The least expensive will be handmade styles.

Updating a sofa is as easy as purchasing a sofa cover. They are perfect for covering the imperfections of your couch. They are perfect for adding new life to you sofa instead of replacing them entirely with a new one.

Instead of buying brand furniture, sofa slipcovers can be used to make your old or dingy sofa look like it just came fresh off the show floor, or to simply protect it from getting soiled.

Easy Fabric Choosing Tactics For Modular Sofas

March 25th, 2010

If you are thinking of a new sofa for your home or having one re-covered, then you will need to think about the fabric, in terms of type, quality, and colour. Getting it wrong could prove a costly mistake.

Your first consideration will probably be the colour, whether you want it to tone in to an overall room setting, or whether you would rather it stands out as a bold statement. Your exact colour choice might not be available in the type of fabric you have in mind, but by shopping around and considering all the options you should come up with a shade that is close to your first choice in a fabric that suits.

You will want the colour of your sofa to fit in with the overall dcor of your room so this will be your first consideration.. Try to make a list of two or three colour options so that you can find a suitable colour in a suitable fabric.

The price range may be an over-riding factor. Generally speaking the more expensive a fabric the better quality it is and the longer it can be expected to last. If the fabric you want is just too expensive then you may be able to find an alternative type that you hadn’t originally considered that could look and last equally well, and that is somewhat cheaper to buy. The only alternative is to put off purchase until you can afford the fabric you really want.

An easy to clean fabric is essential if you have children or pets. Modern micro-fiber covers can be simply wiped over with a damp cloth. Leather is another easy to clean option and comes in a range of types and finishes. Chenille is soft and durable but more likely to take up stains. A sofa that is more decorative than functional, or at least only has light use, can be covered with light cotton, velvet, or linen., materials that offer a tremendously wide range of colours and patterns.

If your sofa is to be used frequently you will need a more hard wearing covering. It’s best to avoid raised patterns or velvets that can wear and look old before their time. Upgrade fabrics can be more expensive than the standard but can look classier by incorporating multi-coloured weaves or wear better by being thicker or more closely woven.

A fabric is like a carpet in that the type of fibre and the way it is woven can affect longevity. The finishing and colour dyeing also can affect the durability of a fabric. Another check worth doing is a thread count of different fabrics. The higher the thread count, the harder wearing the fabric is likely to be and the better it will last.

Direct sunlight can cause fading of colours of fabrics so it’s worth checking the ability of a fabric to resist fade. If it is not very fade resistant you might need to consider placing your sofa to avoid being affected in this way. This might be difficult in a smaller lounge where your choices are limited.

Why Rug Cleaning Is Important

February 20th, 2010

Whether you do it yourself or hire a professional, sooner or later we should all think about Rug cleaning. The best thing you can do to avoid needing Rug cleaning more frequently is to stay on top of things by vacuuming regularly. Even if you don\’t see anything on your Rug s, they are collecting dirt and dust which will make them dirty.

We have all seen what a Rug that has been sitting under a couch looks like. Even though the rest of the Rug may look fine, once we see the brighter, lighter color of the section that\’s been hiding under the couch, we realize how dirty the rest of it is.

Dust and dirt settle onto Rug s every day. You may not see it but when you vacuum you are sucking all this up. If these dirt and dust particles are left sitting, they will work their way into deeper parts of Rug fibers. Any moisture in the air will dampen the dust and dirt causing them to stick to the fibers and become part of the Rug . When you do run a vacuum over your Rug , these particles are harder to remove.

So, regular vacuuming is very important. Rug s should be vacuumed at least once a week. Yes, we are busy and it seems impossible to squeeze this into our schedules. But it is vital to maintaining the value of our investment.

Of course even with regular vacuuming, Rug s cannot be kept as shiny and new as they were when we first got them. Dirt and dust are always going to make their way inside. A regular steam cleaning will keep them from accumulating and getting so far into the Rug that they can\’t be removed. Cleaning every 6-12 months is recommended.

Your options are to hire a professional cleaning company to come in and do the task or do it yourself. The pros will do a thorough job, getting behind and under all furniture. Doing it yourself is far more tedious but can be done. You can rent a machine from most supermarkets or purchase one from almost any department store. Chemical cleaning solutions are readily available or you can look into making your own solutions at home. Books or the internet will give you many recipes for at-home creations.

A good idea is to have the pros come in once a year and then give it a touch-up yourself six months later. Then be sure to maintain regular vacuuming in between. Your Rug s will thank you for it!

Consumers urged to carefully choose the carpet

February 10th, 2010

When purchasing a new carpet, consumers should choose carefully and make sure what they are buying will be easy to clean.

According to UK Flooring Direct, choosing flooring for the home is a major issue, so householders should make decisions based on what will be compatible with their homes.

Picking a carpet or rug that has maximum dust-repellent qualities is also important because dirt tends to cling very tightly to carpet fibres making it difficult to remove by ordinary carpet cleaning methods.

Writing in About Property, the firm explained that consumers should take the time to determine what type of material they want their carpets to be made from and browse through the various fabrics and textures.

“Do you want one that is made from 100 per cent wool?” UK Flooring Direct commented. “What about the attractive 80/20 per cent wool twists out there on the market? Furthermore, there are deals to be found on natural carpets and Berbers.”

“Either way, you should always ensure that you stick to your budget and plump for the carpet that will best suit your home.”

Winning Over Those Carpet Stains

February 10th, 2010

No one wants food and other stains in their carpet to win out and stick around. The solution begins with a suitable carpet cleaner, one that`s up to the job of making those stubborn carpet stains trying to move in on your territory hit the door.

The same products can often be used at home to clean and restore a fresh look to your carpets. Read the label to see, if you’re up to the task of carpet cleaning on your own, when it suits you.

Look for a foaming cleaner that is not too harsh on the environment, which means it does not contain phosphates or chlorine. Check the label to see whether or not the container is recyclable too.

Most such products will work on your upholstery as well as carpets. It is always a good idea to perform a test before delving into a big job. Test on the underside of corner cushion or on a corner of the rug that is always covered.

When dueling with carpet stains, make sure that you have everything you need organized before you begin. This includes your bucket, brushes, sponges, and materials for covering the legs and bottoms of furniture around the room you’re about to clean. Don’t forget knee pads, for those longer jobs. If you don’t have any, simply grab a cushion. Anything is better than nothing.

Decide where you’re going to begin, and where you’ll end your project and stick to your plan. Pick up furniture to move it out of the way. Dragging items will potentially damage your rug.

Take the time to cover the legs or bottom of any furniture in your path: chairs, sofas, book shelves, and so on. Try wrapping feet and bottoms in aluminum foil or wax paper. Many products can leave stains on wood and other materials, so it’s always best to overprotect parts that you don’t want to ruin.

Remember not to use too much water on your carpet. Less is more! And take care to avoid spills on your floor covering, as it can be hard on the fibers. Try sponging stains in a single direction.

While you’re getting up close and personal with your floor covering, keep a pair of scissors handy to trim any stray or fraying bits and pieces. Cutting them is always a better bet than unraveling your carpet in one shot.

Once you’ve completed the task, there are a couple of important things to remember: don’t walk on your work right away! Wait a few hours or overnight, until the carpet is really dry, before travelling on it.
Once it’s dry, don’t forget to run the vacuum cleaner over it to finish the job. And, finally, make sure you pick up that furniture once more as you put it back into place.

So there’s help out there to make sure that you don’t allow those carpet stains any more room to grow. Show them who is in charge. Take them out while they’re fresh.
