It certainly isn’t rocket science, but today’s bulbs are incredibly more efficient than those traditional light bulbs we have seen for years now. As they burn out replace them with new energy saving bulbs, or just replace them all at once. You will save a lot of money on this one change.

Lower wattage bulbs will save you some money. Don’t leave the bathroom light going all night. Place a real night light in the bathroom. It’s enough light for you to see enough to do your business. Same for your hallways and stairways. You don’t need to illuminate the area beyond that which you need to see where you are going. Often times a small bulb at 2 watts or 10 watts is all you need. You can run a couple of these for a long time on the same energy you would have that one 100 watt bulb burning all night.

Do you have a chandelier or other multiple bulb lights? Reduce the wattage of these bulbs so that when they are on you get enough light from them to see as well as you have to see. Often these are loaded up with multiple 60 or 100 watt bulbs when a 40 would do the job.

Try to get your family on board. I know that some people, lots of teens in particular, will open the refrigerator door and stand there holding it open while they look through what is there. This lets the cold air out which needs to be replaced. Get the whole family to realize this is eating up electricity. Let them know that they burn up a gallon of ice cream worth of electric every month by doing that and see if you can curb their refrigerator shopping habit.

Turning lights off is one area where we probably all would plead guilty. It never fails that we enter a room, turn the light on and then leave the room with the light on. It’s human nature but it is also a huge waste of electricity. I often see my house with four rooms fully lit up with a couple of TVs running when there is no one in them. Get past this situation.

One of the best ways to save on the lighting bill is by the use of motion sensors. They will turn the lights on when you enter the room and shut them off when you leave the room. The motion of your body triggers the lights to come. When motion stops the lights go out. Under normal circumstances no one will be completely motionless for several minutes so they should stay lit while the room is in use.

Timers are a very good alternative to motion sensors. Timers are particularly good for outdoor applications. You can set them to come on and go off at predetermined times such as evening and morning. The use of timers will really save you some money in a situation where the lights normally stay on longer than they are needed.

All of these ideas are good solid money saving tips. With the economy like it is today there are more and more people looking to save a few bucks on their energy bills. Many of these tips will save a considerable amount of money if you can implement them and stay with it.
