Why Rug Pads are Good for your Wood Floors

February 7th, 2010

Hardwood and wood floors can be strong yet susceptible to damage from everyday use. Some common causes of damage to wood floors are the rough backs of rugs rubbing against the floor or furniture legs causing scratches and indentations. These don’t have to be problems if you use the right rug pad under your rugs.

A quality rug pad has many functions. It prolongs the life of any area rug. It also provides a non slip feature where slipping is an issue. A rug pad can also add comfort and sound insulation. Finally, a rug pad acts as a barrier between rugs and furniture and your wood floors, hence protecting and prolonging the life of all hardwood and wood floors.

For all area rugs, there should be a rug pad. Now, let’s look at the best choice in rugs pads to offer the best protection for wood floors. Since there are many rug pads available, I like the solid ones for the best protection. There are solid jute rug pads and solid jute and rubber combination rug pads. The quality versions of these solid rug pads are dense enough to withstand heavy furniture indentations as they protect your wood floors.

There are the rug pads with the open weave, or holes, and as these are readily available, if floor protection is your main concern, the better choices are the solid pads. The non slip rug pads with holes are fine for providing a non slip feature yet thay are not quite heavy or solid enough to resist much furniture weight from possibly damaging your wood floors.

The solid rug pads that protect best are either 1/4 of an inch thick or thicker. These pads act as a strong barrier between the rug and your floors and usually prevent much damage. Rug Pad Corner offers two types of these solid pads and both are quite dense for wood floor protection. You may find other places that offer solid rug pads as well.

For the best in hardwood floor protection where you have rooms with area rugs, choose the right solid rug pad and you will avoid significant damage to your floors. The small investment now will save you from a possible small fortune in floor repairs later.

How to Care for Rug Pads

February 7th, 2010

Rug pads are walked on everyday and are usually not seen. Although they truly don’t require much maintenance, there are a few simple things you can do to prolong the life of any rug pad.

Try to make a point of rotating your area rug once a year. At the same time, you can rotate your rug pad as well. Rotation allows for even wear to your rug and rug pad and this is one step in prolonging the life of both. When rotating your rug and pad, it is a good idea to roll up both and vacuum and or dust the floor underneath. Since with some larger rugs this is not easily done, take the time now and give a quick dusting. Next, check your rug pad and if there is any dust that penetrated through from the rug over the year, give the pad a quick vacuum.

The rotation should be 180 degrees. The point here is to even out any wear that your rug and pad are exposed to. This is a great idea as well in avoiding any harsh fading to your rug. In rooms with plenty of sun light, rugs may feel the effect of fading and rotating will even out any fading that occurs. When you have placed the rug and pad in the proper direction, place your furniture back on the rug. You are now done with a simple rotation until another year.

If your rug pads ever get wet, it is a good idea to expose them and allow them to air dry. Once dry, you may cover them back up for normal use. Once in a while when you are vacuuming, it does not hurt to lift the corners of your rug and sweep or vacuum that part of the pad. Since dust does settle in rugs, some of this dust transfers through the rug and onto your pad. Removing the dust occassionally will help the rug pad perform as it should.

That’s really about all there is to caring for quality rug pads. I always tell customers to lift the edge of their rugs once in a while and check the pad to make sure all is well. This way, if you have a faulty rug pad that is damaging your floor, you may catch the damage before it turns into a disaster.

Rug Pads for Persian and Oriental Rugs

February 7th, 2010

Persian and oriental rugs can last a lifetime with the proper rug pad. A rug pad will prolong the life of any persian and oriental rug while also protecting your floors and your family. Since persian and oriental rugs are handmade, the back of the rugs consist of knots. These knots should be protected with a quality rug pad.

If your rug tends to slide, then the best rug pad for your persian and oriental rug is a recycled jute and solid rubber combination rug pad. This rug pad is needle punched to a dense quality. The recycled jute surface is slightly textured to hold your rug while the solid rubber bottom is patterned to grip to your floor. One important element of this rug pad is that it is dense enough to protect the back of all persian and oriental rugs. When the rug is walked on, the pressure from each step pushes down against the pile of the rug. This in turn pushes the knots of the rug against the hard floor. With this dense rug pad, the rug pad will act as a barrier and protect the knots of your rug. The knots of a rug are what actually keep hand knotted rugs together and the better protection, the longer your persian and oriental rug will last. This rug pad is approximately 1/4 of an inch thick.

Another great rug pad for persian and oriental rugs is one used with rugs that really don’t have a slipping issue. This is for rugs that are 8′ x 10′ and larger and for rugs that have furniture anchoring them. This rug pad is comprised of 100%  recycled jute that is needle punched. There are various quality weights of this jute pad and the best is a 40 ounce weight. This means the pad is very dense and this is what hand knotted rugs need to protect the back of the rug. You will also find this recycled jute rug pad for persian and oriental rugs to be comfortable, mold and mildew resistant and odor free. This rug pad is just less than a 1/2 of an inch thick.

I tend to shy away from those non slip waffle looking rug pads. The fact that they are not solid means that the back of hand knotted rugs is not fully protected. This type of pad is better for machine made rugs or rugs that have a backing and no knots.

Using either of the two above mentioned rug pads for persian and oriental rugs will prove to be a sound investment in your rugs and your floors. You may see these pads at Rug Pad Corner along with the option to purchase the best rug pad for persian and oriental rugs.

The Benefits of Recycled Felt Jute Rug Pads

February 7th, 2010

Area rugs need a rug pad and the choices in pads are plentiful. Here, I would like to talk about the benefits of choosing a jute rug pad for your padding needs. Jute rug pads were originally made from horse hair and jute and today, they are made from either recycled materials or synthetic materials. I favor the recycled felt jute rug pads for a few reasons.

One benefit of recycled felt jute rug pads is that due to the materials, they are nonallergenic and mold and mildew resistant. A quality recycled jute rug pad does not contain any odor, such as that from a pad that contains latex. People with sensitivity to alleriges are fine on a recycled jute rug pad. The fact that they are mold and mildew resistant makes recycled jute rug pads a preferred pad on concrete floors as well and in basements.

Another benefit of recycled jute rug pads is that for those areas senstive to rubber or adhesives, recycled jute rug pads are completely safe. There are many stories out there about damage to floors from rug pads and the recycled jute pads do not contain any material to be of any damage to any floor. Use them on hardwood and all wood floors, even laminate floors, as well as tile, marble and vinyl. Recycled jute rug pads are completely safe on all floors.

Now, there is the sound insulation aspect. A dense recycled jute rug pad can dampen sound in rooms where it is an issue. Many people living in apartments enjoy the rewards of this jute pad as the pad can truly eliminate alot of the sound from people walking above. One important point I should make is that the higher density jute pads work best. Choose a 40 ounce density for optimal performance.

Finally, like any quality rug pad should, a dense recycled jute rug pad will prolong the life of any area rug. The pad acts as a barrier between the back of your rug and the hard floor and prevents premature wear to the back of your rug. Again, it is important to choose a dense pad, such as a 40 ounce weight, to truly get the best performance of a rug pad. The dense pad not only protects your rug from wear, it also prevents any damage to your floors by resisting any possible heavy furniture indentations.

If your rugs do not have a slipping issue, such as for most room size rugs, then choosing a quality recycled jute rug pad is an excellent choice. It should be noted that for smaller rugs that tend to slide, the recycled jute rug pads do not prevent sliding. When shopping, try to avoid synthetic jute pads as these usually contain an adhesive, or polypropylene, and this could possess an odor, particularly in damp or warm conditions. You may find a quality recycled jute rug pad at Rug Pad Corner

Quality Rug Pad: How to Choose

February 7th, 2010

Whether you have an antique rug or a new rug an you’re concern is to make sure to get a quality rug pad, your choices are good yet you need to pay attention to details. There are many quality rug pads available that are either non slip pads or simply to protect your rug and floor while adding comfort. In the different levels of rug pads there are a few aspects you should consider when looking for a quality pad.

In the world of non slip rug pads, the quality ones are either made of an organic substance or a solid rubber. I stress solid rubber because a very inexpense way to manufacture non slip pads is to use nylon or pvc, a form of plastic, and to coat this material with a spray adhesive to give it a non slip feature. Unfortunately, this spray is only temporary before it stops providing a non slip feature and usually marks and damages your floor. The organic version of this, a non slip pad with holes, uses more plant oils in place of the chemical spray and has been proven to last without damaging most floors. For a more substantial non slip rug pad, one to be considered the best, there is a great choice that is made with a combination of jute and rubber. This pad is dense to prolong the life of your rug and protect your floor from scratches and indentations. Here, again, the quality version of this pad is one in which the rubber side is a solid layer of natural rubber. Many are made today at a less expensive level using a sprayed on latex. Although some of these latex sprays may be a form of rubber, the fact that it is a spray and not a solid layer that is sewn on causes the material to break down and possibly stick to your floor. The Ultra Premium at Rug Pad Corner is one which contains a solid, sewn on layer of natural rubber.

Finally, a quality rug pad for rugs that do not require a non slip function is one made of a recycled jute. This pad is mold and mildew resistant, nonallergenic and is compressed in such a way that the density protects the rug and floor. The felt jute rug pad is made in various qualities, or density, and the best is a 40 ounce. This is dense enough to protect your rug and floor yet soft enough to feel the comfort of it. Here, make sure the pad is made from a recycled jute and does not contain any chemcals or latex.

Making a small investment now on the right quality rug pad for your rugs and floors could prove to avoid costly damage later. Find your rug pad sources and take a little time to make sure the rug pad is the quality your rug and floor deserves.
