Buying Cheap Area Rugs

February 8th, 2010

Many people would love to put a rug in their home. Some rugs can be very expensive. Oriental rugs are very expensive but do look fantastic. There are cheaper options available. However you will need to make sure that you aren’t choosing cheap imitation rugs. Shop carefully on the internet and in home improvement stores and you should be able to get some great deals.

Research

Whatever type of rug you are looking for, you should do plenty of research. Spend time learning how these rugs are made and how to identify a quality rug. You should be very careful when buying rugs to make sure that you don’t purchase anything which is fake and of inferior quality. If there is anything which sounds far too good to be true then there’s a good chance that it is.

Check the Company

Check that everything is above board by doing research on the business. It’s worthwhile phoning up the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to check if there are any complaints. See what you can find out about the company by searching for their name on the internet. Bad experiences are often reported on the internet. This is a very easy way to quickly search and find out about the business.

Reliable Business

You must stick to reputable businesses no matter how tempting it can be to try somewhere else. It should be possible to get discount rugs even when shopping in expensive stores. End of Season sales are some of the best ways to get a good priced rug. New stock needs to be brought into these large stores and to make this possible the old stock needs to be sold off.

Reliable Guarantee

It is very important that you purchase rugs from a reliable dealer who offers some form of guarantee. This is particuarlly important if you are purchasing a rug that you haven’t seen on the internet. Thoroughly research the returns policy so that you can return the rug if it’s not what you want. If the rug isn’t as good as you were led to believe then you can simply return it.

Surplus Stores

Discounted rugs should be easier to find if you visit one of the many discount chain stores. You may consider one of the many chainstores which offers discounted rugs. These companies work by purchasing unwanted stock and then selling it at discounted prices. The stock comes from firms that no longer want it, or have gone bankrupt. There are lots of different bulk buy retailers who sell discount rugs.

The Best Rug Pad for Silk Rugs and Carpets

February 7th, 2010

You have a valuable silk rug that probably took months, maybe even years to make by hand and now you should protect it with the right rug pad. Silk rugs are very detailed, valuable and impressive. The fact is that this type of rug is an investment and we should protect this investment.

The best rug pad for silk rugs is one in which there is a textured surface and a non slip bottom. This pad is usually made of a jute surface and rubber bottom. There are lots of choices available and it is important to make sure you choose the right version of this rug pad. Make sure the surface is made from a recycled jute that is needle punched. This process creates an extremely dense pad with a slightly textured surface. The texture tends to hold your silk rug to the pad, making it less likely to crawl on the pad. The bottom of the pad should be a solid layer of rubber. I always stress the fact that this should be solid rubber because there are many imitations available that are less expensive because they are made with a sprayed on latex or chemical. Although this will hold the rug to the floor, it will not last as long as the original and tends to damage floors over time. You may see the best rug pad for silk rugs at Rug Pad Corner

Many people use the thin non slip pads with holes in them. These are good for some rugs but the fact that the pad has holes does not provide as solid a foundation as is required for silk rugs. Thicker pads are great too but here most thick pads may not keep your silk rug flat. I have a client who only buys fine persian rugs and she keeps coming back for the jute and rubber pad. I asked her if it works as well as I believe and her exact words were ” I would not use any other pad. I have had my first one for 12 years now and it still has several years left.”

When it comes to your silk rug investment, do not skimp on the pad. Using the right pad will prove to be a solid decision and one that will protect your investment for years to come.

Rug on Carpet Pad

February 7th, 2010

An area rug is usually the foundation of every room. This is no exception for rooms that have wall to wall carpet. Many people tell me they place a rug on top of the carpet. I like the look of this and keeping the decorative look requires placing the proper pad underneath your rug to keep it as wrinkle free and flat as possible. There are a few types of rug to carpet pads available yet not all perform as they should.

I often hear customers ask how to keep rugs flat on carpet. Their first idea is to use carpet tape or something sticky to hold the edges of the rug down. This is a misconception as any kind of tape truly does not work if you plan to use your room. Think about the tape. If you stick tape along the outer edge of your rug, perhaps the tape will keep the edges of your rug in place temporarily. Now, walk on the rug and place furniture on it and you will find this tape to be very short lived. The rug on top of carpet needs a solid foundation underneath its entirety for it to remain flat and wrinkle free during normal use.

I advise customers to not waste their time trying to solve this dilemma. The proper thing to do is to find a rug pad that is reversible, used for hard floors as well as carpet. This type of pad is available as a combination jute and rubber. Rubber side down, it works great for rugs on hard floors. Rubber side up, it works great on top of carpet. Here the idea is that the rubber grabs your rug and prevents it from shifting as best as possible. One great aspect of this pad is that since it is extremely dense, it resists weight of furniture that you may add to your rug, again helping to keep your rug as flat as possible.

Now, it is just as important to choose the right jute and rubber reversible rug pad for your rug on carpet. If possible, try to choose one that is composed of a recycled jute and a solid, natural layer of rubber. If you skimp, you’ll get one that is synthetic jute and a rubber like substance. Although this may work at first, we need to be careful not to cause any damage to your rug or carpet. The recycled jute does not transfer to your carpet andf the real layer of rubber that is sewn on to the jute does not break down and crumble.

You may see the quality version of this reversible rug pad at Rug Pad Corner where the jute is recycled and the rubber is real. The rug pad should be cut about one inch less on all sides than the size of your rug as this eliminates the edges of your rug from being lifted off the carpet. Once you place the proper rug on carpet pad under your rug, you will enjoy your room for many years and, if you ever decide to use the rug on a hard floor, flip the pad over and use it for rugs on hard floor surfaces.
