The Wonderful World Of Roller Shades

August 29th, 2010

Roller shades are a very popular window treatment with a long history of both easy maintenance and easy use. In the many years these shades have been around they have grown from a cheap window covering to something beautiful for your home, auto, porch and more. They even come in beautiful, new high-tech patterns and materials! Step into the world of roller shades and you just might fall in love.

When these shades were first invented, they were intended as an inexpensive and effective way to block out light. The first of these shades were made out of paper or canvas on an aluminum spring-loaded roller. This inexpensive, durable, lightweight design caused the window shades to become very popular and soon they were cropping up in homes, campers and porches everywhere.

Over time these shades have become much more than just a great way to block out light. Advances in science have allowed better, lighter steel rollers with more durable springs to come to the market. Mounting the window shades is easier than ever with careful choices in design and cleaning is even easier than before with better quality materials. Some shades can even be removed from the rollers and swapped out for brand new looks!

These shades aren’t just plain canvas and paper anymore! Luxurious lace shades make airy accents for beautiful rooms, designer print shades are popping up to add classy accents to homes all over the country, and sturdy vinyl shades have become fixtures in sun rooms and patios everywhere. Even paper shades have improved with fancy hand made designer papers in beautiful colors available for the discerning home decorator.

The person on the go will adore portable sun-blocking shades! These specialized shades are made of special dark screen material that blocks out sun that can burn young faces and old faces alike yet are still clear enough to let the driver to be able to see everything around them. These shades also work very well for those who just want to protect their cars from blistering summer sunlight but don’t want to worry about the expense of tinted windows.

Care and cleaning for these lovely shades is a snap! All you need to do is to use a soft dust cloth or a feather duster to remove any dust that builds up. The smaller, portable shades can sometimes be shaken lightly to remove dust as well.

A few of the canvas shades can be taken off their rollers for laundering should they ever need deep-down cleaning. The ones that can not be removed from their rollers, however, can be simply vacuumed clean with the soft brush attachment. Any stains can be blotted away with a damp sponge and a little bit of cleaning solution.

As we move into the future expect to see even more wonderful advances in shades. Dust repelling shades are on the horizon and brand new, beautiful shades in materials you never dreamed of may become widespread. No matter where our lives take us, we can be sure that anywhere we go, these wonderful shades will always be right there with us.

Roller Shades Are Back And Better Than Ever

August 28th, 2010

In the beginning roller shades were simply plain and functional, they were here for a purpose and they did their job well. That was to block out all the light so that the room was dark, nothing got through. They were not meant to be beautiful being plain white vinyl with a piece of wood that resembled a ruler slid through the bottom of the shade to weight it down and hold it straight or still against wind.

About the last ten years vertical blinds seemed to have dominated the windows for an alternative to shades. These are not quite as comparable to the roller shades though since vertical blinds do not have the ability to totally black out all the light. Plus they are a pain to clean and they do get really dusty. But the verticals have always had the ability design wise to be much trendier.

Now roller shades are coming back and better than ever because they have fixed the fashion problem. There are so many different fabrics and textures to chose from. There are different levels of linens, choice of suede and burn-out fabrics. The textured shades are in many cases meant to invoke thoughts of nature through the look and feel of the materials used.

The colors that are out there are seemingly unlimited, if someone can dream it up they can put it out. There seems to be a focus on very natural colors at this point in time. Very soothing light beige, sandstones and sages, nothing to bold or loud. There is also a way to layer the window shades with colors so that if it is wanted you can actually coordinate them to your furniture with out having the blind a whole solid color.

The roll down shades come with many different thicknesses in order to give the level of privacy desired. Some are layered so that it is adjustable for when the need to have more or less light in can be easily addressed.

There can also be the option of solar shading for roller shades. This way the beautiful view outside does not have to be wasted in order to cut down on the heat coming in through the window or the glare on the TV.

Even the trim on the bottom of the window shades has been upgraded and improved. No longer is the only option to have the straight cut now there can be decorative cuts put on it and even textured ropes added for looks. Another improvement has been adding a side cord that works just like it does for the horizontal or vertical blinds. This helps to limit how much the blinds themselves are being touched with the result being less stains and dirt from opening and closing them.

Roller shades have come back better than ever and there is a set that could go great in any room of the house. It is nice to see things that are a great idea stay current and upgrade so that it continues to be a great idea for years to come.

Using Roller Shades To Add Beauty To Your Home

August 27th, 2010

Roller shades allow a person to keep the sun from beating directly into the inside of the house. It allows one to keep the inside of the house cool or, when the situation requires it, allows you to remove the window shades and let the sun directly in for heat on an otherwise cool autumn or spring day. They can be adjusted the same as any other blind so one has the ultimate ability to control the amount of sunlight in the room.

Lighter than most metal or vinyl shades, they are also usually much more reasonably priced. Unlike their vinyl and metal brethren they do not have to be pre-cut for the window you want to use them on. It gives us greater flexibility when purchasing if we don’t have the exact dimensions. If we find out the window is a different size than we thought it was they can still be used without fixing them to the window permanently.

An advantage to having shades that are not connected to the window frame is that they can be used vertically or horizontally and they can be interchanged between windows. If your house, apartment, or condominium has windows facing the morning, afternoon, or evening sun, simply move the window shades from one room to the next as time passes. This allows for extra savings because one does not have to purchase separate window shades for each and every window.

Using shades this way, without having them permanently fixed to each window in the house allows one to remove them completely during the winter months when they may not be as needed. This has the added advantage of making each room look different for each season. So even if the rules in the apartment one lives in are fairly strict as to adding things to the home, you can still keep out the direct sunlight.

There are number of things in the home like furniture or even wooden floors that are difficult or impossible to move and so are more affected by the sun coming in through the windows. The sun can bleach the covers of couches and chairs, wood and even carpeting and so protecting against direct sunlight also protects your possessions. It is an added advantage that these protective devices are simple and good looking.

These devices provide a simple and effective way to add color, style and texture to any room decor. Many are constructed with modern fabrics so they can be cleaned or even resist dirt and grime from the outset for ease of care. Designs are as varied as the imagination and are economical enough to change patterns by season or even special occasion.

Whether it is your desire or necessity to make a room completely dark or any grade from that to lightly filtered sunshine, there is a product and material to fit the need. The attachments available to personalize the window shades ensures that you window dressings will be completely unique and of your choosing. They come in a variety of activation devices including a continuous loop cord.

The variety does not stop there. One can choose from decorative hems and those with tassels. Even the activation piece has variety with many different types of ring pulls. Whatever your preference, roller shades can match it with precisely what you desire for your windows.

Roller Shades Give Tradition A New Look

August 22nd, 2010

From the late nineteenth century and for the next sixty years, roller shades were used in many homes to keep out the light and heat of the sun. They kept anyone from seeing inside the home. They operated on a spring loaded roller bar that allowed the shade to be adjusted, they were made of paper and they could be ordered in most major catalogs.

By preventing direct sunlight from coming in through the window, the room was darkened and would not become so hot. As technology expanded, they were no longer paper. By the mid twentieth century most were vinyl. But they remained a plain, undecorated white designed simply to cover windows, keeping out light and heat and preventing anyone from seeing inside the home.

Today, they are used to add the final touch to a decorated room, protect against the damage of the sun to floor and furniture covering and make rooms darker when mood or lighting needs to be adjusted to create the right look or feel. They come in wide varieties with many textures and colors available. They are both functional and beautiful.

Traditional installation fits inside the window frame, but allows light to seep around the edges. Outside installation sets solve the problem by placing the shade such that it covers the window frame as well, further darkening the room. Western facing rooms become easier to cool with less direct sunlight, thereby lowering the cost for cooling. Furniture and carpets will fade less if protected from constant sun exposure. Sunrise is no longer the morning wake up call for eastern facing bedrooms and day sleepers can rest in darker rooms.

Roller shades may be custom ordered in practically any color. Additionally, they come in a variety of textures, including a return to their origins in the form of delicately designed paper shades. Prints, patterns and designs of every conceivable type are available. They may be ordered to match the walls or perhaps an accent piece. Shades with teddy bears or sail boats trimming the edges may be the final touch to a room decorated for a child. Or perhaps a woven tapestry or bamboo look would complete the decor for a sun room.

For a clean, straight edge look, metal-like fabrics are offered. Ultra violet light is thwarted with solar shades while allowing a view outside. Biodegradable shades serve a greener world. And flat window shades no longer use the roller bar in the traditional way, rising in soft tailored pleats to offer style and elegance.

Have a skylight? Roller shades made to follow the slope of the roof can be added. And if pulling it up and down is a problem, motorized shades work by remote control. Simply push a button and up or down it goes.

If a search of the available options still does not meet all of the specifications, roller shades can be customized at almost every level. Fabric and hobby stores now sell kits or various kinds. Some kits come complete and others require the purchase of some items, but all allow for greater customization of the window shades. And for those who demand the most personal touch of all, shades can be painted. Easy instructions are available for painting, stamping or stenciling shades to make them truly one of a kind. With a little acrylic paint, stamps or stencils, and an artistic idea they can be a unique addition to any room.
