Reflect Your Personality Through Area Rugs

February 9th, 2010

Area rugs are significant decorative accessories that you can use to enhance the beauty and esthetic appeal of your homes. In fact, area rugs can be described as pieces of art, which can act as a reflection of your own individual personality. Area rugs are just as unique as the homes they furnish. They come in different sizes, shapes, designs, patterns, textures, and colors to give the defining look to any living space.
r
rThere are different kinds of rugs such as contemporary rugs, traditional rugs, oriental rugs, patio rugs, animal skin rugs, hand tufted, and hand knotted ones.
r
rThey can also be broadly divided into two categories – hand made rugs and machine made rugs. Rugs can also be made from natural fibers as well synthetic fibers.
r
rThe price range of area rugs is as wide as their types. They can range from around USD 50 to over USD 10, 000 depending on where you purchase them from and the amount of work that has gone into creating one. Department stores stock up on the cheaper ones whereas specialty stores would be able to offer you unique, designer pieces. Generally, rugs made from natural fibers like wool and silk would cost more than the synthetic ones. Hand made rugs are rare because it takes more effort to create one. So, their prices are higher than the machine made rugs. The amount that you spend on buying a rug would depend on your budget and how you want to use your area rug – whether you want to use it to accentuate your home or whether you want to see it as an investment and a beautiful heirloom to pass on. You need to consider this point before buying an area rug.
r
rArea rugs add definition and warmth to any living space. However, they come in a variety of options that often makes the process of choosing one a difficult job.
r
rFirst of all, you need to understand the size requirements. You have to take exact measurements and not simply size up the area to determine the exact dimensions you would need. For example, if you want a rug for your dining area, you have to measure the dining table and add a foot and a half to the measurements in order to facilitate the placement of chairs.
r
rYou also need to define the shape of the rug that would suit your room the best. Round area rugs would be perfect under circular dining tables. For a seating area in your living room, you can consider a rectangular shaped rug. To make drab spaces such as hallways appear more attractive, you can think of long runners. You need to choose the shape that provides the best covering and esthetics to the space.
r
rThe style you choose depends upon your taste. You should think about the statement you want the rug to make. You can go for something urban, modern, and trendy. There are some great rugs that make use of geometric designs and bold colors. Braided rugs work best for country homes. Bold floral prints or oriental prints make traditional homes look beautiful. If you want the area rug to blend in with the background, opt for woolen rugs in subtle patterns and mute shades. Rugs with bold designs and vivid colors can become the focal point of any room. You need to decide whether you want area rugs to be eyeball grabbers or parts of a larger design and choose the patterns and colors accordingly.

Decorating Around You Dining Tables

February 9th, 2010

Dining tables that you have to choose from are in a wide variety. You have many different woods that are used to make them. In fact you can now find many materials other than wood that have been used to make dining tables. So how do you pick the right dining table to add to your home?
r
rFirst you need to find the right size of table, never buy one that is too large for a room. Placing in a table that is too large is going to make your room look smaller than it may even be. Plus if you create a crowded atmosphere you’re going to have people feel rushed and possibly have more accidents in the room.
r
rAlso make sure though your table is big enough to seat your family for a diner each night. You shouldn’t buy a small table for a room, just because you want it to look larger. In fact you will create the opposite affect because people who are trying to eat will be crowded because they don’t have room on the table. You will find a happy medium.
r
rSince most people think of dining tables as being made from wood, it’s most likely what you’ll buy. Choose the wood that you think will look best in your room. Finding a more exotic wood that the table has been made from can actually be possible if your hoping for a unique look to your room.
r
rShapes that dining tables come are even a wide variety. But again like a large table, the shape must look good in the room. If it doesn’t you will be distracting from the look of the room. Creating yet another feeling you don’t want to have in that room.
r
rMost people will use dining tables as the center point to decorating in the room. This will mean that you buy a table and add in things around the room that will work with it. Look for sales on accessories, or even used ones from flea markets and garage sales. Bargain stores are great for more accessories too.
r
rThose accessories that are added are going to compliment the table, not take away from it. So make sure as you pick them out. Get an area rug to add under your dining table too, but get one that will allow enough space. By enough space you need to have a rug that will cover past the table, and allow a chair to still be on the rug when it’s pulled out for a person to sit down.
r
rIn closing, the dining tables you consider should be ones that will fit the room by size, and shape both. If your building the look around the table you can change the rest of the room. But if your adding it to a room and not redecorating, make sure the table also fits with the look you already have in the room. Most tables are made to match a variety of looks, so unless you really go out on a limb you should be fine.

Adding Area Rugs to your Interior Design Strategy

February 8th, 2010

For homes with wooden or tiled floors, area rugs can serve as colorful accents that bring a home’s floor to life and add a new element to your interior design strategy. In fact, area rugs are one of the favorite tools of professional interior designers. Here are a few tips on how to use area rugs in your home.

Size and General Tips

It’s important to get the measurements right before you even begin to search for the nicest area rug in San Diego. Take a tape measure and determine what size rug you’ll need for each room. A good rule of thumb is that a rug should be about 24 inches (2 ft) shorter than the shortest wall in the room.
Now, do area rugs work for wall to wall carpeting? The answer is yes, despite what anyone might tell you. Just make sure the contrast between the carpeting and the rug is good.

The Living Room

Living rooms are the place where homeowners and guests gather round and talk. Area rugs are great for creating an atmosphere of conversation and togetherness. Pick a color and design that matches your furniture layout. If you have a small living room, a single large area rug will suffice. If you have a larger living room with different areas, two or more rugs are best to create a cozy feeling. For an area rug to cozily define a conversational grouping, it should leave no more than two feet of bare floor extending behind the furniture. All the furniture pieces should have at least their front legs on the area rug itself.

Bedrooms

Area rugs protect your feet from cold wood floors and make your bedroom feel warmer and more welcoming. They also help create a focal point, which usually points to the bed (the center piece of any bedroom). The rug should be under, minimum, a third of the bed. It should extend 30 to 36 inches from the side of the bed.

Hallways and Stairs

Hallways and stairways are two of the most high-traffic areas of any house, and are rugs and runner carpets can help protect the floor from wear and tear and also give these areas some spice. Rule of thumb: pick a rug that lets approximately six inches flooring show on all sides.

Dining Rooms

Area rugs can turn a cold dining room into a warm and welcoming place to sit down and eat. Pick an area rug big enough to fit all the table pieces and chairs. There should be plenty of rug space left around the furniture. A good rule is to add at least 40 to 48 inches the measurements of your table and have that be the size of your dining room rug.
